For the last four years I have had the absolute pleasure of being your representative on Oshawa City Council. Serving our great community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. We have made some tremendous strides as a city but the work is not done.
During my time serving on the Finance Committee and as Vice-Chair, I have continuously advocated for sound financial stewardship. Over the last four years, the city has managed to pay down approximately $26 million in debt principal repayments and reduced internal debt by more than $10 million. At the same time, the city has invested $105 million in capital infrastructure projects and replenished nearly $20 million into reserves. Continuing down this path of disciplined financial practices will allow us to build a sustainable future while maintaining affordable services.
I have also served as the Council representative on the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee, working to ensure that our City continually strives to be accessible to all. As Vice-Chair of the Community Services Committee working to continuously improve our City parks, trails, playgrounds, the delivery of recreation, leisure and cultural opportunities that create healthy communities and engaged citizens.
I will be your voice for transparent and accountable taxation. I will continue to advocate for strong public services, affordable housing, childcare and seniors programs, all of which play a vital role in ensuring a good quality of life for all. I will increase the focus on job creation, creating more jobs in Oshawa is an integral aspect of growing the economy and sustaining our success for years to come.
This October elect someone with the capacity to listen, to understand the social and economic imperatives that face our City, elect someone who will make sound decisions and move our City forward. On October 22nd re-elect John Shields, your Regional and City Councillor for Ward 3 because our future is now.
